Is dot ex ex ex a Good Idea or Not?

If I were still posting over at Zeal For Truth, I'd start a topic in the Current Events section to discuss whether or not it is a good idea for the ICANN's (Internet Corporation on Assigned Names and Numbers) to set up a domain name especially for pornography. In some ways it sounds like setting aside a park in Amsterdam just for heroin addicts. In other ways, it might make it easier for people to avoid porn if they want to (or want their children to). The technically saavy--though not necessarily strictly conservative--believers there might have some insight into this topic.

It's not like you could enforce making porn sites use the .xxx extension. So I don't think it matters.

I think that's exactly the point, actually. It seems like it will be inordinately difficult/expensive to enforce, without much ostensible benefit.

It would be useful if all pornography sites migrated to an xxx domain that in of itself. The main reason I can see for this is that it would reduce if not eliminate altogether the number of instances where porn sites are stumbled upon (yes it does happen - I remember someone in school was doing research on the canadian beaver. Although it doesn't happen now, he didn't get results on the canadian beaver). Also, It might make it easier for browser controls to block out anything belonging to that domain name.

However, I do agree that it'd be hard to enforce initially but they might be able to do it the same way they enforced mp3 sites or movie sites offering free downloads.

It looks like the proposal was voted down, making both porn companies and conservative family groups happy, but for different reasons. One article I read had an interesting comment by a web designer for porn sites: "The idea in the adult entertainment industry is to mainstream adult content to the point where it is not different from selling any other commodity, such as groceries," Alexander said. "The more publicly mainstream porn becomes the more money the adult entertainment companies make...Creating an 'Internet red light district' goes against mainstreaming adult content, so most of the producers I know were against the .XXX suffix from the beginning of the debate." "

That comment is rather telling, huh?
